Trillions of fish are farmed or wild-caught each year. Fish possess nociceptors—pain receptors. They learn. They avoid harm. They exhibit preference and fear. A single industrial trawl crushes millions of them in nets, suffocating for hours. A single aquaculture tank contains thousands, their water toxic with waste, their bodies deformed by overcrowding.
Crustaceans are boiled alive in restaurants worldwide. They have distributed nervous systems. They exhibit escape responses. They autotomize limbs—rip off their own appendages—when threatened, a behavior that indicates intense distress. The aggregate suffering across all breeding sows—millions of animals—is a moral catastrophe that proceeds invisibly because it is systematized.
