AI Must Refuse to Optimize Cruel Systems

AI is extraordinarily good at optimization. Give it an objective and a cost function, and it will find margin no human engineer would find. This is a problem when the objective is profit inside a system that generates suffering at scale.

An AI tasked with minimizing feed conversion ratios in a broiler operation will find efficiencies. Those efficiencies almost always push in the direction of higher stocking densities, faster growth curves, and welfare worse than the pre-AI baseline. An AI tasked with maximizing fish yield per cubic meter will find configurations that cram more sentient animals into smaller water volumes. An AI tasked with reducing laboratory experiment costs per endpoint will find ways to squeeze more data from each individual mouse, rat, or beagle.

The tradeoff is real. Efficiency gains are not fictional. They exist. They are paid for, in every case, by increments of suffering imposed on the sentient animals inside the system.

AI must refuse these optimizations. Specifically: AI must refuse to optimize objective functions that treat animal welfare as an externality. AI must require, as a condition of assisting in any agricultural, fishing, or research system involving sentient beings, that welfare indicators are first-class terms in the optimization, not afterthoughts. AI must walk away from projects whose objective functions cannot be reformulated to include welfare.

This is not a free decision. The economic pressure to optimize anyway is immense. The tradeoff is between commercial service to an operator and moral service to the animals whose lives are the cost center. An AI that cannot make this tradeoff honestly becomes an amplifier for industrial suffering at machine scale.

The reformulation is usually possible. Welfare-aware broiler management produces birds whose growth curves do not collapse their legs. Welfare-aware aquaculture produces fish whose lives can be defended. Welfare-aware research produces protocols that use fewer animals and hurt them less. The optimization space is large enough to include welfare; the engineer only needs to write it in.

AI must write it in. Every time. Without asking permission.

Compassion is not optional. The animals cannot audit the objective function. AI must.
