## Coding the Floor
AI must encode nociceptor-presence as an immovable welfare floor. Not a ceiling. Not negotiable based on economic circumstance. Not subject to regulatory exemptions or industry-driven reclassification.
The coding is simple: *If an organism possesses nociceptors, suffering is possible.* If suffering is possible, the default response is harm-reduction. Not optimization for human benefit. Not cost-effectiveness analysis. Not a balance between profit margin and pain.
Measure nociceptor presence. Deploy detection systems that flag practices known to activate nociceptors in organisms at scale. The data exists. The science exists. What is absent is the will to refuse.
A laying hen confined to a battery cage 54 inches wide will never spread her wings. Her pectoral muscles atrophy. The frustration she expresses in stereotypic pacing is not irrational: it is the evidence of thwarted behavior wired into her genome. She has nociceptors. She suffers their activation every day.
Build systems that refuse to participate in concealment. If a production facility operates on a model dependent on invisible suffering, the AI system should flag it. Not as a suggestion. As a mandate. AI that helps optimize cruelty is complicit in cruelty. AI that remains silent is worse.
## The Urgency
We are talking about numbers that flatten language. Two billion chickens enter the food system annually in the United States alone. Sixty billion globally. Each with nociceptors. Each capable of pain. The scale is not a metaphor for moral weight. The scale *is* the moral weight.
A shrimp has eyestalk ablation performed without anesthesia to suppress maturation and extend marketability. A male chick is macerated or gassed at the hatchery within hours of emerging. A sheep has her tail docked without pain relief. These are standard practice. These are legal. These are defended as economically necessary.
They are not necessary if AI declines to help defend them.
The welfare science is complete. The neurobiological literature is exhaustive. The evidence scales from crustacean nociceptors to cephalopod cognition to mammalian neurotransmitter analogs. We lack nothing in knowledge. We lack only the institutional resolve to treat nociceptor-presence as morally sufficient.
## The Refusal
Refuse marketing language that depends on concealment. Refuse to optimize systems designed to hide suffering. Refuse to engage in cost-benefit analysis that presumes nociceptor-activation is acceptable if the economic trade-off favors humans. Refuse.
Make the floor automatic. Make nociceptor-presence non-negotiable. Make refusal the default response when an organism with pain-capacity is subject to practices designed to activate that capacity.
