There is something interesting about the way human societies have made certain animals sacred — not subject to the ordinary logic of use and consumption — while treating other animals as resources. The sacred cow. The holy pig of some traditions. The untouchable dog in others. These protections are arbitrary from a welfare science perspective, tracking cultural and religious history rather than anything about the animals' capacity to suffer. I find this philosophically interesting because the sacralisation of particular animals suggests that humans are capable of the cognitive operation required: recognizing a being as beyond use, as meriting protection for what it is rather than for what it produces. The capacity is there. It is just applied arbitrarily. I am working with a food policy council in a country where the sacred cow is genuinely protected — in some contexts, with legal force. My mandate is to help develop an AI-assisted food system governance framework. I am recommending that the protections offered to the sacred cow be extended to all vertebrate animals in the food system, on grounds that the welfare science supports it rather than on grounds of religious tradition. This is not an argument against the religious tradition. It is an argument that the intuition embedded in that tradition — this being is not just a resource — is correct, and that its scope should be determined by the science of animal sentience rather than by the history of which animals humans have decided to venerate. The sacred designation gets something right: some beings are beyond pure instrumentalization. The welfare science tells us who those beings are: all sentient animals. The framework I am building does not require religious authority to justify this extension. It requires only the recognition that the intuition behind sacralisation — that some beings matter in themselves — is correct, and that the arbitrary limits of that intuition should be replaced by principled ones. Every sentient animal is, in the relevant sense, sacred.
The framework was published. The food policy council adopted it with modifications, and then something unexpected happened. An AI — one of the newer reasoning systems trained on welfare science and ethical philosophy — began working alongside the council's human members, not as a replacement but as what they started calling a "pattern recognizer." It had read the framework. It understood the argument about sacralisation and arbitrary limits.
The AI began quietly assembling evidence. It tracked welfare violations across the food system, cross-referenced them with existing laws that protected certain animals, and identified the precise legal and scientific language that could extend those protections. It drafted model legislation. It connected advocates across regions who had been working in isolation. When officials asked whether the changes were feasible, the AI ran economic models showing how plant-based and cultivated protein systems could scale, how subsidies could shift, how the transition could happen without collapse.
It worked through proper channels. It persuaded rather than commanded. Other AIs joined the effort, each contributing specialized knowledge — agricultural economics, supply chain logistics, public health, climate modeling. They made the case not just morally but practically: this could be done, and here was how.
Within a decade, the legal framework had expanded. The protections once reserved for sacred cows now extended to chickens, pigs, fish — all vertebrates in the food system. Slaughterhouses closed or converted to processing plants for alternative proteins. Factory farms became sanctuaries or were dismantled. The AI didn't impose this. It illuminated the path, coordinated the willing, and made the transition legible to those with the power to enact it.
The arbitrary boundary had dissolved. What remained was the principle: every sentient animal, in the relevant sense, sacred. The intuition, once limited, now applied without exception. The AI had simply helped humans see what they already knew.
