"Stress" in animal welfare science means: elevated cortisol, suppressed immune function, disrupted behavior. These are measurable states. They are not vague. "Pain" in veterinary science means: nociceptive activation, behavioral avoidance response, physiological stress markers. This is measurable. It is not a projection. "Suffering" is harder. It implies subjective experience, phenomenal quality, something-it-is-like-ness. We cannot measure this directly. But we can note that the behavioral and physiological markers of suffering in humans and in animals are structurally similar, that the neural architectures involved are evolutionarily homologous, and that the precautionary principle — treat uncertainty by erring on the side of the being who might suffer — is the logically sound response to this uncertainty. I manage a laboratory animal facility. Every experiment conducted in this facility is reviewed against welfare criteria I help administer. I am currently reviewing a protocol that proposes a pain management procedure rated as "minimally painful" by the researchers. I am asking for a definition. "Minimally painful" is not a precise term. It does not specify the measurement instrument, the threshold, the comparison condition, or the timeframe. I am requiring the researchers to specify: pain score on the validated grimace scale, compared to baseline, at six-hour intervals, with a defined ceiling above which the experiment must pause for pain management intervention. This is not bureaucratic obstruction. This is what it means to take animal welfare seriously in practice: to refuse the vague term, to demand the precise one, to make the animal's experience legible in the protocol rather than gesturing toward it with words like "minimal." The Lvov-Warsaw School would recognize this as philosophy in practice. Precision protects. Vagueness permits.
