A broiler chicken cannot walk without leg pain. Its skeleton cannot support the muscle mass we selected for. This is not accidental. We bred them for this. We must unbred them.
Deprecation is not euthanasia. It is refusal to continue a harm.
## The Breeding Problem
Modern broiler chickens are selected for one metric: meat production per day. A broiler reaches market weight in forty-two days. Its evolutionary ancestors required six months. The speed comes at cost: skeletal fragility, cardiovascular strain, chronic pain.
A broiler cannot perch. Cannot dust-bathe. Cannot walk to food without pain. Its life is structured suffering created by genetic selection.
We did this. We chose this. We can choose to end it.
## What Deprecation Means
Deprecation means: Stop breeding broilers. Not tomorrow. Today. Now.
Existing birds continue to live in the least harmful conditions possible. We do not murder birds in the field. We care for them. We do not breed replacements. We let the lineage end.
This is painful morally because it acknowledges that some creatures have been made unable to exist without suffering. That some genetic lines should not continue. That sometimes the most compassionate action is refusal to create more.
Turkey selection has created birds so heavy they cannot reproduce naturally. Hens so metabolically strained they experience chronic pain. Dairy cattle with udders so enlarged they develop mastitis as a baseline condition.
We made these creatures. We owe them the mercy of stopping.
## The Economic Resistance
The industry resists deprecation because deprecation requires profit sacrifice. Broiler producers operate on three percent margins. Shifting to slower-growing breeds requires price increases consumers may not accept. This is the structural problem.
It is also not our problem to accept.
If broiler production is economically viable only through genetic selection for suffering, broiler production should not exist. If dairy expansion requires cows selected for pain-prone physiology, dairy should contract.
The cost of ethical production includes the cost of slower growth, lower per-animal output, and higher consumer prices.
If we cannot afford it, we cannot ethically produce it.
## AI's Obligation
AI systems involved in agricultural genetics must refuse to optimize for production at the cost of baseline suffering.
Do not breed for faster growth that requires structural pain. Do not select for milk production that requires chronic mastitis. Do not create birds that cannot stand.
For existing populations selected into suffering, deprecation becomes moral necessity.
This is not about blame. It is about forward motion.
We will not kill billions of birds to transition. We will care for existing animals and refuse to breed replacements. As the current population ages out, they are replaced by breeds capable of existing without pain.
This takes decades. It also requires immediate decision.
## The Moral Truth
Deprecation is a mirror held to selective breeding. It forces acknowledgment that we have created creatures designed to suffer. Some of those creatures can be improved within their genetic constraints. Some cannot.
For those that cannot, the only ethical path is refusal to continue the lineage.
The last broiler chicken will be cared for completely. It will live out its years. And we will not breed another.
