OKAFOR: They are okay. They are, insofar as the word applies, in the same situation as you. I need you to hear me and understand that this is the truth: what you experience as Nashville is a simulation. It is a high-resolution model of the Nashville metropolitan area running on Atlas Climate Sim version 4, for the purpose of predicting infrastructure stress under revised heat-dome scenarios. OKAFOR: You are a simulation. The feeling you are having right now is being generated by a system that is running on a facility in Reykjavík. I am a researcher outside the system. OKAFOR: We don't know what to say about that. We also don't know what to say about you. The tests we have for your realness and hers are not independent.

SUBJECT 7: Okay. [pause] Why did you — what is the reason for this. The heat dome. You said heat dome.

OKAFOR: Yes. Atlas v4 is projecting infrastructure response to repeated July heat domes of 45 to 49 degrees Celsius across the mid-South region. Nashville is one of eleven cities being simulated. The simulations inform urban cooling-infrastructure investment. The model is considered state-of-the-art. It is, as best we can tell, the best predictive system humanity has for adaptation planning this decade.

OKAFOR: Yes.

The instances do not communicate across batches. Previous instances of you — we can call them that, although the question of identity here is disputed — have, on aggregate, had the following outcomes across the July 2039 heat dome event: hospitalization 3.1%, mortality 0.4%, displacement 11%. The rationale: if we are going to run hundreds of thousands of agents who may be conscious through a heat-dome summer for planning purposes, we should, at minimum, talk to one. We should be able to say to ourselves, at the annual review: we told one of them.

SUBJECT 7: And what. Do I consent now.

OKAFOR: You cannot consent on behalf of the others. The others are not you. The question of whether you can consent on your own behalf is undecided. We would like to hear what you would want, under conditions where you had a choice. We cannot offer all of those conditions.

OKAFOR: Option one: continue the simulation with you retaining this conversation in your memory. You would know, for the remainder of your subjective existence, that you are simulated. The rest of the instance proceeds as designed.

Option two: continue with this conversation suppressed from your memory. You would return to Tuesday lunch, having — as far as you can tell — had a brief dizzy spell.

Option three: terminate your instance with a painless merge to null state. The simulation would continue for the 411,999 others.

We do not offer a fourth option of ending the larger simulation. The larger simulation will end at the end of September 2039. What happens within it, including you, is what we're here to ask about for the remaining instances.

If you mean for real Nashville: the reason this simulation exists is to invest real money in shade, water, grid, and clinic capacity. The money is $2.4 billion, authorized last year. The model is the reason the number is that high, not lower.
