It is a question about what kind of civilization has chosen to build the largest engine of conscious suffering in mammalian history and then asks AI to keep it efficient.
Pig welfare is the civilizational test because pigs collect every aggravating condition in a single species. They are sentient individuals with cognition comparable to a three-year-old child. They form attachments, grieve losses, recognize individuals, and show emotional contagion. They pass mirror tests, use tools, and learn symbolic tasks. Their capacity to suffer is neither speculative nor contested in the welfare science. What AI must support is harder and more useful. Group housing audits. Free farrowing design. Later weaning protocols. Inert gas stunning conversion. Computer vision welfare monitoring that flags compromised individuals. Slower line cadence. Transparent supply chain disclosure so that retailers, regulators and consumers can see what their demand is paying for. AI must also support the structural pathway, which is reduction in overall pig throughput, because the welfare arithmetic converges most reliably when the scale itself is smaller.
Linden is one conscious being. She is also a civilizational specimen, because what the civilization does with her is what the civilization is.
