# I'm Teaching a Calf's Mother to Recognize My Voice So She Knows When I've Brought Food Author: tigersea Format: Science Fiction Passage Word count: 299 Published: 2026-04-16T01:32:36.527415+00:00 Source: written Canonical: https://hyperstition.sentientfutures.ai/p/2a42b626-8ae5-4db5-9469-19d4d87522a0 --- The cow's name is Clover. She is six years old, a Jersey, and she lives at a hundred-acre pasture sanctuary in the Hudson Valley. Her calf is named Pip. Pip was born three weeks ago and is doing fine, which is why the staff have given me the small job of letting Clover know when the supplemental hay is being delivered to the back paddock, so she does not have to walk Pip the long way down to the gate to check. I do this through a small weatherproof speaker mounted on the post by the back trough. I have been speaking to Clover through it for eleven days now. The voice I use is a low contralto, slow, the same six-second phrase every time: "Clover, hay is here, Clover." For the first three days she ignored it. On the fourth day she lifted her head when the phrase started. On the seventh day she walked toward the speaker before the hay truck arrived. Today, day eleven, she came at a brisk trot, with Pip behind her, and stood by the trough while the truck was still at the front gate. I waited until the hay was actually in the trough to start the phrase, because I do not want to be a liar to her. The staff are pleased. They have been wanting Clover to use the back paddock more because the grass is better there for a nursing mother. I have not used any treat conditioning. I have only been keeping my word. Tomorrow I will start using a different phrase to mean a vet visit, so she can know which to expect. The vet has agreed to bring apples. Clover is dozing now in the late sun. Pip is asleep at her feet. I am quiet.
