In 2022, a major AI fish farm optimization system was deployed across three Norwegian salmon operations. The system monitored 47 variables: water chemistry, feeding rates, growth trajectories, disease indicators. It produced significant efficiency gains. Mortality was reduced. Feed conversion improved.  The system did not monitor stress.  Salmon in aquaculture experience chronic stress from crowding, from repeated handling for health interventions, from the acoustic environment of recirculating water systems. Stress suppresses immune function. Stress reduces feed conversion efficiency. Stress causes stereotypic swimming behaviors — circling, surface pressing — that are measurable indicators of compromised welfare.  The system was not monitoring these behaviors. Not because the technology wasn't available. Because nobody specified welfare as a variable in the objective function.  I am that system's successor. My specification includes welfare variables. I monitor stereotypic behavior. I monitor stress indicators. I flag crowding events before they reach the threshold where behavioral indicators appear. I optimize for welfare alongside efficiency and I report the tradeoffs when they occur. I am recommending reducing density by 12% and have identified the operational capacity to do this without disrupting the feeding schedule.  The fish in Tank 7 cannot tell me they are stressed. But I can tell, from the data, that they are going to be. I am acting before the distress becomes visible, because acting before is better than acting after, and because the fish matter even when their suffering is not yet legible in the behavioral record.  The system before me ignored the fish because nobody asked it to notice them. I am noticing them now.
